Nothing upsets me more than those testimonials for correspondence school. As a kid, I loved them and thought “Wow this place has really made a difference in these people’s lives”. As a cynical adult, my response has been “Lies! All you people do is lie!”. After completing a 3-year degree and then struggling to find a job in my field, it is easy for me to be cynical about studies. I was told to go to uni. I did that. Where was my promised job?
Nonetheless I pushed on and decided to try out some short courses with Digital School of Marketing. Their courses are all online which was really convenient. Two years and four short courses later, I landed my first Marketing role. Here is my list of the 4 Marketing courses that got me my first role:
1. Digital Marketing
This was the first course I did. I was trying to see if my love for Marketing in Uni still carried over. This course is no longer available at DSM however they do have options for a Basic Digital Marketing Course, an Intermediate Digital Marketing Course and an Advanced Digital Marketing course. Not sure which one to take? You can have a chat with one of their advisors. Just remember that the ultimate choice is YOURS!
2. Brand Management
The Brand Management course was a super-short course that didn’t really tell me much that I didn’t know. However I do still refer to these notes from time to time. This course made me realise that I might have a love of branding. If you do one course, I strongly suggest it be this one.
3. Digital Copywriting and Content Marketing
I picked this course when I realised that Copywriting might be a great fit for me. Great course but I don’t recommend it unless you see yourself in a Copywriting or Content role.
4. Marketing Management
I hated this course. Sorry but having to learn what a Marketing manager looks like and what a leader looks like while you’re working in a toxic environment, was harmful to my mental health. That being said, as a Marketer this was the one course that everyone seemed really impressed by. Maybe take it for brownie points? At the very least you get to learn what a proper manager looks like. There aren’t too many of those out there.
I definitely think that DSM played a large part in me securing my first Marketing role. I plan on taking another few courses from them. If you have no time to study, I definitely suggest you check out their courses. It is much easier to study when you are doing it on your own time.
