There is alot of advice on the internet about how to be a Marketer today. AI this, automation that. The industry is so so different from the one that I broke into but honestly I miss the “good old days”. If I had to wave a magic wand and start from scratch, here’s the advice I’d ignore.

1. Using AI to plug in a skill gap
Whether it’s Graphic Design or Copywriting, be mindful of using AI to serve as a replacement for learning actual skills. It will stunt your growth. Rather focus on learning the skill first and then use AI to help you once you know actually what good looks like and why.
2. Post on LinkedIn Every Single Day
I mean I guess if you want to? IDK. Personally LinkedIn isn’t my favourite platform so I post once a week but if that is where your target audience (i.e potential employers) are then go for it. Regretfully none of my prospective employers hang out on LinkedIn which is a major bummer for me.
3. Pick a Specialisation
Absolutely NOT! In this job market, jobs are asking for marketers to learn multiple roles so while you might want to specialise in a specific skill be sure to learn as much as you can. This is something that works out to your advantage down the line if you want to transition to another role or if you take on a role that has a combination of skills like SEO Copywriter.
4. Big Brands = Better Experience
Not always. Sometimes a smaller brand gives you way more room to learn because there’s less red tape and more opportunities to try different things. Big brands can sometimes just mean doing the same thing over and over.
