Marketing Intern Do’s and Don’t: Employer Edition

Posted on May 8, 2025May 20, 2025 by Shanice Singh

Interns aren’t just here to refill the coffee machine or sit quietly at a desk hoping someone gives them something to do. Although if I’m being perfectly honest, sometimes that is part of the job. If you’re been assigned to an intern, you could be the one to shape a young marketer’s journey. Whether you’re onboarding your first intern or brushing up on mentorship best practices, here are some do’s and don’ts to create a positive, impactful internship experience.

Do:

Offer Help When Needed
Be available. Whether they’re confused about a platform or need help brainstorming, your support builds confidence.

Have Regular Check-Ins
Weekly sessions aren’t just for status updates- they’re opportunities to teach, listen and guide.

Avoid Micromanaging
Give them space to try, fail, and learn. Be supportive, not suffocating.

Provide Clear Instructions
Vague briefs are the enemy. A clear task list means less guesswork and more results.

Keep an Open Door Policy
Literally or metaphorically, make it known that you’re approachable. A “no dumb questions” culture helps interns thrive.

Set Clear Expectations
Outline their responsibilities upfront. Knowing their purpose makes their contributions more intentional and meaningful.

Encourage Learning
Let them explore. Include them in meetings, give them access to tools and walk them through your thought process.

Assign Real Projects
No more coffee runs. Let them work on campaigns or social calendars- something they can proudly showcase later.

Give Constructive Feedback
Praise what works, and kindly explain what doesn’t. Consistent feedback helps them grow fast.

Support Their Creativity
Welcome their ideas—no matter how out there. You might find your next viral idea hiding in a brainstorm.

Promote Mentorship
Let them shadow a few different people on the team. Exposure to various work styles helps them learn what clicks.

Invite Them to Network
Bring them to events or team socials. It’s about more than tasks- it’s about building connections.

Don’ts

Don’t Ghost Your Intern
Disappearing acts are for magicians, not managers. Make time to check in.

Don’t Assume They Don’t Need You
Even confident interns need guidance. Don’t leave them to figure everything out solo.

Don’t Underestimate Them
Fresh minds bring fresh insights. Give them credit where it’s due.

Don’t Dump Only Menial Tasks
They’re here to learn. Let them do the real stuff- not just printing and pasting.

Don’t Skimp on Communication
Radio silence helps no one. Share project updates, explain expectations and keep them in the loop.

Don’t Dismiss Their Questions or Ideas
Questions mean they care. Answers mean you care. Make it a two-way street.

Don’t Forget Their Career Goals
Ask them where they want to go. Help them draw the map.

Don’t Overlook Inclusivity
Make sure your space welcomes everyone. Diverse teams = stronger teams.

Don’t Ignore Their Wins
Celebrate even small victories. A simple “well done” can do wonders.

Who’s my target audience- and are they on TikTok?
Can I consistently create short-form, engaging video content?
What value will I bring- education, entertainment or inspiration?
Do I have the capacity to keep up with trends (without burning out)?
Am I ready to show my face, voice, or brand personality more casually?

Copywriter vs Content Writer- what’s the differe Copywriter vs Content Writer- what’s the difference? Let me break it down:

✍️ Copywriter:
Writes to sell. Their words grab attention, spark emotion, and make you hit “Buy Now” or “Subscribe.” Think ads, landing pages, email promos. They’re the persuasive ninjas of marketing.

📝 Content Writer:
Writes to educate and build trust. Their words inform, inspire and keep your audience coming back for more. Think blogs, guides, social posts. They’re the relationship builders.

While a good copywriter can do both copy and content, it helps to hire a specialist depending on what your needs are (i.e a content writer for blogs and articles vs a copywriter for landing pages and promos)
Before you start writing that caption, email or la Before you start writing that caption, email or landing page… ask yourself these 3 questions:

1️⃣ Who are you writing to? (The more specific, the best)
2️⃣ What do you want them to do? (Click? Buy? DM you?)
3️⃣ How does your offer benefit them? (Spoiler: “I worked really hard on this” is not a benefit)
